STRESS MAY DELAY WOMEN GETTING PREGNANT September 11, 2010

Healthy women trying for a baby may have reduced chances of becoming pregnant in any month if they are stressed, the results of a study by researchers at Oxford University and the US National Institutes of Health suggest.

The work provides evidence for the first time of an association between high levels of a biological marker for stress and reduced chances of a woman conceiving during the fertile days of her monthly cycle. The findings, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, suggest that some couples wanting to become pregnant may benefit from relaxation techniques. (more…)

The fact that our female ancestors dispersed more than our male ancestors can lead to conflicts within the brain that influence our social behaviour, new research reveals.

Scientists from Oxford University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville examined the impact that genes ‘knowing’ which parent they come from – a process called ‘genomic imprinting’ – has on how selfish or altruistic they want their carriers to be. (more…)

 

RUSSIA OPENS ASIA SEA ROUTE August 28, 2010

Russia has opened a shortcut northern sea route from Europe to Asia across the Arctic, reasserting itself as the dominant power in the strategic mineral-rich region.

A Russian tanker, escorted by powerful nuclear icebreakers, successfully skirted the icebound Arctic coastline of Russia with a load of gas condensate for China. (more…)

Department of Science & Technology established in 1971 has been playing a pivotal role in the promotion of science & technology in the country. It is the main Extra Mural Research Funding agency of India. In the changing context, the department is currently embracing a proactive and participative role in revitalizing the science and technology base of the Nation. Focus of various programmes of the department during 2009 includes attraction of young talent in science, improvement of Science & Technology infrastructure in Universities including women only universities, mounting the national mission on Nano Science & Technology, working towards a draft national innovation act, solar energy research initiative, technology mission on water, two National Missions on Climate change and data sharing policy. VIKRAM SARABHAI SPACE CENTRE CONDUCTS A SERIES OF SOUNDING ROCKET LAUNCHES TO STUDY THE ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE January 18, 2010

The longest annular solar eclipse of this millennium occurred  on January 15, 2010. The eclipse was well visible in the southern parts of the country. On this unique occasion, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram successfully launched a total of eleven Rohini series of indigenous Sounding Rockets from TERLS, Thumba and Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, to investigate the effects of the solar eclipse on the atmosphere. All the payloads (scientific instruments) of the rockets were developed in-house by VSSC said the ISRO press release. (more…)
